10 Best Afrikaans ‘kuierplekke’ in the Northern Suburbs

Its Friday night, Noot vir Noot has just ended and your ‘favourite’ went home with the ‘boerpot prys’, you’ve read the Huisgenoot cover to cover and want nothing more then to ‘sokkie sokkie’ to all your loved afrikaans treffers to the likes of Kurt Darren, Gerhard Steyn, Ray Dylan and the sexy boys that make up Eden. But where do you go on your Friday night to live up the Afrikaans sokkie ‘vibe’?

Ché Bar

Plaasteater recently moved into the Hazendal Wine Estate and offer the best live bands atmosphere in the Northern Suburbs, promoting young talent at the same time. The Plaasteater has an intimate feel with all your Afrikaans rock punk bands playing while you enjoy that beer you’ve longed for.

If you like your ‘branna and coke’ made by your own special recipe then Klipwerf Danssaal was built for you. With a rather small cover charge, large dance floor surrounded by tables, 2 fully equipped bars, and smoking areas, you are welcome to bring your own alcohol in and enjoy the night dancing away to all your Afrikaans treffers been remixed with a few golden oldies thrown in there in between.

At Opskop you get the best of both worlds – an idyllic langarm saal where you can take your own drinks in. With respect to the DJ who is a girl and a very slim thing to see. The chances of you dancing into people and spilling drinks are very small as Opskop’s dance floor is big! And only 13 bucks will get you a cold Miller Draft. There is also the ‘Opskop shooter’ which is a must when visiting Opskop.

The Palms

On those humid Friday nights, The Palms is the place to be. Braaiing outside with the family or sitting in the restaurant inside, The Palms caters for everyone with sport on big screens, a small dance floor, and tables under palm trees (hence the name). The area is open to all ages but the bar is strictly over 18.

Aandklas is an old school Afrikaans rock club in Stellenbosch with live bands from the well known legends to the up and coming student bands. Aandklas is so welcoming you can come heat bang to your favourite Afrikaans rock song barefeet!

Nagskof is still a baby on the Afrikaans club scene but far from premature. Nagskof offer a wide variety of Afrikaans music with a large dance floor and cheap shooters. And if you ask the barmen really nicely they will make you any shooter of your choice for a next to nothing price.

Die Watergat

Die Watergat is a local name amoung all students who have their birthday kuiers there. A bit out of town, but well worth the drive for the Afrikaans commercial music mixed by resident DJ’s with cold ones to relax with. And in the words of Watergat: “Jy is eers amptelik ‘n student as jy by die Watergat kuier!” PS: There is even a “Watergat Express” – their shuttle service!

At Nikita’s you can really get bang for your buck. Only 12 bucks for a cold one, and you can take your own drink in. Nikita’s also specilise in Promo girls and guys, making your night so much more worthwhile. Their music is very well mixed with langarm and the odd hip hop number in there too.
